THE IMPACT OF HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IN OYO CHAPTER ONE 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study The term environmental is better appreciated as perceived. Thus, the term defined a universally acknowledge method of description or definition. For instance, environment has been conceived as a system within which living organism interact with physical element (Sada, 2001). This means that, environment can be conceived as the condition, circumstances and influences of organism (Strahler and Strahler, 2007). In addition, the environment is made of a number of spheres which include the hydrosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere and biosphere. Within these spheres are a number of interrelate activities in operation. Consequently, t he environment is perceived in this work as the general surrounding where a number of interrelate activities take place within the environment system and between man the environment. Man‘s relationship with his environment has always changed with time depending on his understanding and knowledge of physical environment. However, the natural environment is generally endowed with the space (Simons, 1981). Thus, man has come to regard his environment as a depot housing his needs and is a therefore resources within it. According to Jimoh, (2000), environmental degradation has become a major problem facing people in most societies of the world. This includes pollution, climate change, causing drought and excessive rainfall, deforestation and desertification among others. Environmental degradation increases the vulnerability of the societies. It affects and contributes to the scarcity of resources, climate change will lead to increase the intensity and frequency of weather extremer’s such as heat waves, food, droughts and tropical cyclonic (Faniran, 2002). The area is facing a lot of problems. As rural settings, harmful materials like faces, urine and disposal of non-degradable materials into the areas has led to the degradation of the area (Miller 2002). Environmental degradation is the disintegration of the earth or deterioration of the environment through consumption of assets, for example, air, water and soil: the destruction of environments and the eradication of wildlife. It is characterized as any change aggvation to nature’s turf seen to be pernicious or undesirable. Ecological effect or degradation is created by the consolidation of an effectively substantial and expanding human populace, constantly expanding monetary development or per capital fortune and the application of asset exhausting and polluting technology. It occurs when earth’s natural resources are deflated and environment is compromised in the form of extinction of species, pollution. Environmental degradation is one of the largest threats that are being looked at in the world today. The United Nation International Strategy for Disaster Reduction characterizes environmental degradation as the lessening of the limit of the earth to meet social and environmental destinations and needs. Environmental degradation can happen in a number of ways. At the point when environments are wrecked or common assets are exhausted, the environment is considered to be corrupted and harmed. There are a number of different techniques that are being used to prevent this, including environmental resources protection and general protection efforts Amicus journal staff (2000). Environmental issue can be seen by long term ecological effect, some of which can demolish whole environment. An environment is a unique unit and incorporates of the living and non-living components that live inside it plants and creature are evident part of the environment, but it also includes the thing on which they depend on. For example, stems, lakes, and soil. Environmental surroundings get to be divided when technology advancement splits up areas of land. Chernoff, P.A (2004). Some example of these include street which may include through woods or even trails which wind through prairies. While it may not should all teribles on the surface, there are bad results. The biggest of the result are felt by particular animal and plant group, the vast majority of which are specific for their bio-region or need a large area in order to make sure that genetics line are kept intact. Chardwick, D.H (2001). Environment degration is one of the ten threats officially cautioned by the High-level panel on threats. Challenges and change of the United Nations. The United Nation international strategy for disaster reduction defines environment as ‘the reduction of the capacity of the environment to meet social and ecological objectives and needs environment degradation is of many types. When natural habit are destroyed or natural resources are deflected, the environment is degraded. Efforts to counteract this problem include environmental protection and environmental resource management. Environment working group staff (1999). 1.2 Statement of the Problems There are number of problems associated with impact of poverty on housing condition in traditional area of Atiba Local Government Area of Oyo State which have deplorable and constituted total nuisance to the environment, housing deterioration, facilities overload, slum creation, squatter housing overcrowding and socio-spatial disorderliness among others. Therefore, this research is to examine how poverty can be reduced in other to improve housing condition in traditional landscapes, the physical or natural environment indicated that the environment include rivers and cultural that the environment includes rivers and water bodies, trees, hill or mountain, minerals resources such as iron ore, gold, diamond and petroleum among other. Thus, every organism see the environment as a resources store which he can convenient fall back on for all his needs (Faniran and Ojo, 2009) However, effect made by man to harness those environment basic resource have translated in to environment degration. By this second component of the environment, it is clear that due to growth in human population, the desire for a better condition of living has ensured Environmental degration can be natural in origin and it can be induced by human activities like farming, fishing and lumbering in traditional area of Atiba Local Government Area of Oyo State. Conflict are the emergence environment degration, which is the discuss in this field. 1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study The aim of this study is to examine the impact of housing development in Oyo. The objectives to be accomplished are; (i) Examine the existing housing condition (physical structure of building) in the area of study. (ii) To identify the cause of environmental degration in Oyo. (iii) Suggest the solution to the identified problems in the area study. 1.4 Significance of the Study The funding of this study will be of benefit to everyone living in traditional area of Oyo and it environment at large because the study will identify the cause and effect of environmental degration in the above mentioned area. 1.5 Research Questions i. What are the causes of environmental degradation in the study area? ii. What are the common forms of environmental degradation in this area iii. What are the effects of degradation sources of the water? iv. What can be done to correct the situation? 1.6 The Study Area Geographically, according to the information hand book of local Government (2001) Atiba Local Government is of the thirty-three (33) local Government in Oyo state. It is located on the longitude 46 East of the green which meridian and latitude 8 44 North of savannah which umbrella like crown and tall grasses (Williams, 2003) Atiba Local Government is bounded on the North and Northwest by Irepo Local Government area has a landmass area of 33389km with a distance of above 170km to Ibadan the Oyo state capital (Adeyemi, 2002) 1.7 Definition of the Terms Housing is the heterogeneous good, a flow of services overtime (Aluko, 2000,can, 1991) Environment: This is the first social group outside home from which the child attempts to given acceptance. A child who is not brilliant does better in school. It is make up of the surrounding human being. Its totality of external influence that surrounds the community of an organism or object on the surface, which also affect in all ways. It is the aggregate of all external organism Degradation: this is condition of wearing down damage which reduces the productivity of the environment. Effect: it refers to as an outcome one result of what people are doing either positive or negativity. Causes: this means what produce effect for an action. Environmentaldegration: is the deterioration the environment through depleting of resource such as air, water and soil, the destruction of ecosystem and the extinction of wildlife. It is defined as any change or disturbance to the environment perceive to be deterious or undesirable REFERENCES Aina D.A (1994) Local action for a depending Global environment crisis address in commemoration of the 1994 world environment day Adeyemi (2000) environmental crisis, an overview in prime will I.
